For over ninety years HD&OS have been performing shows in Hertford, from early days at Hertford Corn Exchange right up to the present day at Hertford Theatre and our own Studio Theatre.
The Society produces five shows at Hertford Theatre each year as well as hosting Hertford Theatre Week. At our headquarters, Bentley House, there are events for members throughout the year, including plays, play readings and other social events.
Our Bentley House headquarters has two rehearsal rooms, extensive workshop facilities, electrical and other stores, wardrobe and a bar. With rehearsals most evenings, committee meetings and young idea workshops, full use is made of all of the facilities.
The foyer and bar area were completely refurbished in 2007 to create an inviting, lively space where members can meet and socialise and audiences can be welcomed to productions at The Studio Theatre. The seating areas and bar are beautifully offset with modern low energy lighting which has been used creatively to enhance the atmosphere of the interior.
Hertford Theatre is the venue for most of our public performances. The 400 seat auditorium contains a large, well equipped stage area, orchestra pit and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems. Backstage there are both group and individual dressing rooms, a make-up area and green room. There is also an enquiry desk where staff can provide information and book tickets.
The Theatre was fully refurbished in 2010 with a foyer, bar and comfortable seating area. The foyer is frequent used for exhibitions of art and photography.
Our productions include drama, comedy, musicals and a pantomime, with plenty of opportunities for performers of all ages to get involved with The Society. We also offer plenty of roles for technical, backstage and front-of-house operations.
